ABOUT US
Ferghana Valley Lawyers Without Borders (FVLWB) is a non-profit, non-political, non-governmental organization, established to consolidate professional lawyers for human rights and freedoms, promote democracy and the rule of law.
Established in 2003, FVWB has become a leading regional association of legal professionals, including advocates, civil and administrative lawyers, paralegals, and law students, united to make professional legal aid accessible to the most needy and vulnerable groups while contributing to the strengthening of the national legal protection system.
Since its founding, FVLWB has concentrated on legal identity issues, enabling the full realization of all human rights and freedoms. Through legal aid and outreach visits, FVLWB has assisted over 65,000 people with various legal issues. Since 2014, we have helped nearly 14,300 people gain legal identity, nationality, and civil documents. Among them, over 2,800 children can now enjoy all rights and freedoms.
FVLWB has supported the efforts of the Kyrgyz Republic in becoming the first country in the world to end all known cases of statelessness in its territory. FVLWB Director Azizbek Ashurov was selected as the 2019 winner of the UN’s Nansen Award. The organization is the coordinator for the Central Asian Network on Statelessness established in 2016.
Based on its mission, FVLWB implements the following activities:
- Legal aid and protection on case-by case basis, in particular to set landmark legal precedents;
- Advocacy efforts for the development of legislation and closing gaps in order to strengthen human rights and freedoms;
-Awareness raising and increasing the capacity of governmental and non-governmental institutions through education, expert and technical support and promoting the best practices;
- Promoting the right to legal identity for all as a basis for the enjoyment of human rights and freedoms.
