Public Association “Lawyers of the Ferghana Valley Without Borders” continues the implementation of the project “Promoting Sustainable Development of Border Communities in Kyrgyzstan to Enhance Cooperation with Uzbekistan”, carried out in partnership with UNDP, UNODC and IOM in Kyrgyzstan.

The project aims to increase legal awareness among the population, expand access to legal assistance, and strengthen cooperation between state institutions, local communities and civil society organizations in the border areas of Kyrgyzstan.

During the first two phases of the project, several practical results have already been achieved. Memorandums of cooperation were signed with the Interregional Department of the Legal Aid Service under the Ministry of Justice of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as with the Resource Center for Migrants. These partnerships contributed to the establishment of coordination and referral mechanisms for citizens seeking legal and informational support.

Coordination meetings were held in all five pilot districts of the project with the participation of representatives of local authorities, civil society organizations and legal aid specialists. As a result, five working communication and mentorship groups were created, bringing together more than 96 participants from border communities.

From December 2025 to May 2026, legal assistance was provided to residents of five border districts. Beneficiaries received oral and written consultations, as well as practical legal support on various issues, including migration, citizenship, visa procedures and civil documentation.

In addition, the project organized both offline and online consultations for representatives of local communities, local self-government bodies, young lawyers and paralegals. More than 170 participants from pilot districts in Osh, Batken and Jalal-Abad regions took part in these activities.

Special attention is being paid to mentorship support for legal aid specialists and to strengthening practical skills related to migration legislation, safe migration, civil registration and legal status procedures for foreign nationals.

The project implementation continues, while the established coordination and legal support mechanisms are already contributing to greater trust, stronger cooperation and improved legal protection for residents of border communities in Kyrgyzstan.
