FVLWB Highlights Statelessness Issues in Central Asia at World Conference on Statelessness 2024

From February 26 to 29, 2024, the World Conference on Statelessness took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was organized by the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion (ISI), the National “Citizenship for All” Program (NFA), and the Malaysian Program for Human Resource Development in Rural Areas (DHRRA). The conference gathered over 400 participants from around the world with lived and acquired experiences of statelessness to exchange knowledge, perspectives, ideas, and skills.

Azizbek Ashurov, Executive Director of Lawyers Without Borders of the Fergana Valley (FVLWB) and Coordinator of the Central Asia Network on Statelessness, actively participated in various discussions, presentations, and panel discussions. He shared insights from his work in the region and discussed ways to address the issue of statelessness. The Network’s contribution to the dialogue was a significant step towards raising awareness about statelessness in Central Asia and seeking constructive solutions.

Furthermore, the Network is actively involved in establishing the Regional Coalition on Statelessness and Dignified Citizenship (SDCC) for the Asia-Pacific region. This initiative reflects a commitment to strengthening international cooperation and coordination in combating statelessness.

At the conclusion of the event, participants left with renewed inspiration and strengthened determination to make a significant contribution to addressing this pressing global human rights issue. The 2024 World Conference on Statelessness served as a vivid example of the power of collaboration in tackling one of the most pertinent human rights challenges of our time.
